Whiteheads (Closed Comedones)

A whitehead is formed when pores become clogged with sebum, dead skin cells, or dirt.

These clogged pores are covered by a thin layer of skin and is know as a closed comedone. The sebum,dead skin cells, and dirt can accumulate, and result in a thick substance that forms a tiny ‘bump’ under the skin. These are very commonly seen by us appearing on the forehead and t-zone areas.

Whiteheads are firm, typically small, and white or yellowish. Whiteheads are not inflamed and will not cause marks or scarring. However, a whitehead can become infected with bacteria and this will acne more commonly termed papules or pustules.

How should whiteheads be treated?

At Aeras, we always aim to treat the cause and ensure that it does not return after treatment.

The treatment of whiteheads would be typical of treating clogged pores. The two main steps in treatment are;

  • Exfoliation/extraction
  • Moisturisation

Exfoliation/extraction is achieved through in-clinic procedures, and daily skincare. This ensures that the pores are less clogged over time and reduce the appearance of whiteheads and blackheads. Extractions, when performed properly and skilfully, reduce existing whiteheads to prevent further inflammed acne.

Procedures we do that help exfoliate/extract and reduces clogged pores include;

These procedures not only help exfoliate and reduce clogged pores, but they also help reduce oil production, shrink the oil glands, and reduce acne-causing bacteria.

Moisturizing well

Moisturisation is crucial to maintaining healthy skin, and at the same time reducing clogged pores and whiteheads. If the skin is dry and dehydrated, it tends to moisturise itself by producing more oil. At the same time, dry skin also results in more dead skin cells. The increased amount of dead skin cells and increase oil production would result in more clogged pores.

Procedures we do that help moisturise the skin include;

  • Skinboosters
  • Aquapeel

These procedures can provide short and long-term hydration needed to reduce oil production and moisturise the skin.
