Fractional Laser for Scar Reduction

What is a Fractional Laser?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) fractional lasers are the Gold Standard in resurfacing laser technology – every new resurfacing technology is compared against the CO2 laser. This is due to its established safety, effectiveness and extensive clinical studies done on the platform, making it a time-tested staple for all practice looking to solve deep acne scars.

Headquartered in the US, you can be assured of Lutronic’s laser optics and beam quality. This laser is a favourite of many treating acne scars in Singapore, due to its reliably replicable results session after session.

How does it work?

Fractionated beams of carbon dioxide laser produced by the machine are calibrated by an qualified and experienced laser physician to cater exactly to the severity of the acne scars. These micro-milimeter beams of laser then cause ‘micro thermal zones’ to create controlled inflammation in the skin.

Immediately, the skin responds by sending signals to the area to start repairing these zones of laser treatment. New collagen and elastin is laid down by cells called fibroblasts in response to the interaction of the laser beam with the deeper part of the skin, called the dermis.

What skin conditions / types of scars does the fractional laser treat?

Laser surgeons have been using CO2 lasers for acne scar treatments of all sorts for years to decades:

  • rolling scars
  • boxcar scars
  • hypertrophic scars
  • ice-pick scars

CO2 laser resurfacing is best combined with immediate post-care treatment, especially with moisturising and/or regenerative skincare.

Is it painful?

Numbing cream will be applied on the treatment area for 30-40 minutes prior to the procedure.

During the procedure, you may been a slight stinging sensation. When the numbing effect starts to wear off, the treated area will feel like a sunburn. This discomfort may last a day or 2, depending on the intensity of treatment.

Is there downtime?

On the day of treatment, you will experience redness of the skin. The day after the treatment, tiny scabs will form over where the micro-laser beams have penetrated the skin’s surface. These scabs signify the start of the healing process and you can expect complete recovery of in approximately 4-5 days.

Due to eCO2 resurfacing being a form a laser therapy, it may be unsuitable for patients with Fitzpatrick skin type V-VI i.e. darker skin types, in which, the Fractional Venus Nano-Fractional Acne Scar treatment would be a safer and better choice.

How effective is the treatment?

Similar to other resurfacing treatments for acne scars, many factors have to be considered, such as the severity of the scars, the surface area of the scars, scar location and type as well as the patient’s natural healing ability which could be related to age and general health.

One could combine this treatment with other forms of deep acne scar treatments such as a subcision, or a subcision procedure with a collagen stimulator or skin healer (Rejuran S).

A medical professional may also discuss with you about using a lower power setting for the first session to allow the treatment team (and yourself) to understand your skin and its reaction to laser treatments.

Multiple treatment sessions are usually required for significant improvement of severe acne scars.
