Aeras Healite Light Therapy
Discover the true science of LED Phototherapy with Aeras Healite II Photodynamic therapy for acne treatment. Photodynamic therapy is traditionally a 2-step procedure performed at a medical clinc that helps shrink oil glands and clear acne.
A photosensitizer is first applied to the skin which makes it sensitive to light – LED light is then shone on the skin to activate the photosensitizers to kill acne-causing bacteria, and shrink oil glands.
However, due to the high incidence of side effects with photosensitizers, especially on Asian skin types, the doctors at Aeras have developed their very own protocol for photodynamic therapy to prevent the side-effects, but maintain the efficacy of the procedure.
What is the Healite II?
Low-Level Light Therapy with the Aeras Healite II is the use of incident light to photomodulate skin cell function, improving healing times, subsiding active acne, promoting skin rejuvenation, and shrinking oil glands. The Aeras Healite II utilises the properties of 633nm and 415nm light via LED technology, treating effectively without the possibility of physical trauma or heat damage. The Aeras Healite II can be used as a standalone therapy or in combination with our other treatments.
How does it work?
Light therapy works best for papular and pustular acne, the everyday ‘pimples’ that are inflamed and red with slight amount of pus. Whiteheads, blackheads, and cystic nodules respond less to light.
When the Aeras Healite II is shone on the skin, it penetrates through various skin layers and help kill some p.acne bacteria. It also helps reduce inflammation and excess sebum production, which are characteristics of acne.
Which wavelength of light is used to treat acne?
At Aeras, we use both the blue light (415nm) and red light (630nm) to treat acne. Studies have shown that both the blue and red light used in combination yields much better results for acne treatment.
When blue light reaches the oil glands in the skin, it excites compounds produced by acne bacteria called porphyrins. When excited by the blue light, these porphyrins produce a toxin that kills the bacteria.
Red light penetrates more deeply into the skin and reduces the production of inflammatory markers that contribute to the formation of acne. Because of its deeper penetration, red light can more effectively target oil glands, shrink them, and ultimately reducing the amount of sebum production.
A study done shows a reduction in inflammatory acne lesions by 76-83% after a combination of blue + red light therapy.
Is it painful?
The Aeras Healite II therapy is painless but can be quite bright. A pair of googles is needed during the procedure. Each procedure takes about 20mins but is usually combined with our lasers or medical facials for maximum effects.
Is there downtime?
There is zero downtime for this procedure.
How effective is the treatment?
The Aeras Healite II treatment as a stand-alone treatment is mainly suitable for inflammatory papular and pustular acne. For other types of acne, this procedure is best done together with either a laser or a medical facial treatment for best results. Our medical experts will determine the type of acne you have and advice on how the Aeras Healite II can be incorporated into the treatment plan.
